What’s the best substitute for BESTMALZ Special X?

We’ve had enquiries asking us, “what is a potential substitute for BESTMALZ Special X?”.

Here are a couple of options suggested by Weyermann®:

  1. Colour is the most important parameter, provided the brewer doesn’t want to change the ratio in his malt bill:  Weyermann® would recommend using 50% Weyermann® Special W® and 50% Caraaroma® to achieve exactly the same colour in the wort and final beer.
  2. The brewer wants the same colour and is willing to adjust his recipe: Weyermann® would recommend using only Weyermann® Special W®, but increasing the proportion in the malt bill as follows: 1% Special X should be replaced by 1.2% Weyermann® Special W®.
  3. The brewer wants the same colour and is willing to adjust his recipe, but he also wants a more neutral aroma and flavour than with Weyermann® Special W®: replace Special X with Caraaroma® as follows: 1.1% Special X with 1% Caraaroma®.
