The Dr Rudi hop variety, formerly known as Super Alpha, is a New Zealand hop recognised for its versatility. Originally bred for bittering, Dr Rudi has gained attention for its aroma characteristics as well. First released by New Zealand’s Horticultural Research Centre in the 1970s, this hop brings dual-purpose qualities to a wide range of beer styles.
Dr Rudi hops deliver both clean bitterness and expressive aroma. With alpha acids often between 11% and 14%, they work well in the early boil. However, brewers also value them for late additions and dry hopping. Dr Rudi contributes crisp notes of pine and citrus, with occasional hints of lemongrass. Because of this, it fits seamlessly into lagers, IPAs, and pale ales.
While primarily a bittering hop, Dr Rudi surprises many brewers with its fresh, herbal aromatics. These properties help it stand out when used as a late kettle or whirlpool addition. Notably, beers brewed with Dr Rudi hops often showcase a bright, clean finish that enhances drinkability. Moreover, it pairs well with other New Zealand varieties like Motueka™ and Nelson Sauvin™.
Dr Rudi hops grow with strong vigor and produce large cones. They thrive in New Zealand’s unique climate and offer consistent yields. Because of their robustness, they appeal to growers as well as brewers. Disease resistance adds to the hop’s reputation for reliability.
