Hop Variety Description

The Olicana hop variety made it’s commercial debut in 2014. It is a sister of Jester® and a daughter of Cascade. Olicana® is also available processed as a T45 pellet. The delicate fruity aromatics of Olicana® are most apparent when used as a dry hop or in lighter bodied beers. The T45 pellets provide a greater concentration of it’s flavour characteristics allowing it to shine in more robust brews.

Olicana® Hops: A British Hop with Bold, Modern Appeal

The Olicana® hop variety is a standout among modern British aroma varieties. Bred by Charles Faram, this hop was developed to meet the increasing demand for intense hop character from UK-grown plants. Its profile is bold and expressive, which makes it ideal for craft brewers seeking fruit-forward aroma in pale ales, IPAs, and lagers. It’s a sister to Jester®, and was named Olicana by Ilkley Brewery during brewing trials after a nearby Roman fort.

Aroma and Brewing Qualities of Olicana® Hops

The Olicana® hop is packed with tropical and floral notes. Brewers often detect mango and passionfruit alongside subtle herbal undertones. These characteristics make Olicana® perfect for dry hopping, whirlpool additions, or late boil use. It brings a vibrant aroma without overpowering the balance of the beer.

Although it is mainly used for aroma, Olicana® has a moderate alpha acid range, typically between 7% and 9%. That range allows it to contribute clean, soft bitterness when needed. Its flexibility allows brewers to use it in a variety of ways depending on the desired outcome.

Olicana® Hops in Modern Brewing

As craft brewing evolves, brewers seek hops that deliver complexity while supporting sustainable, local sourcing. Olicana® hops meet both goals. Grown in the UK, they reduce the environmental impact of importing hops. At the same time, they offer the bold aromatic qualities once thought exclusive to imported American or Southern Hemisphere varieties.

Breweries like Thornbridge and Wye Valley have created beers featuring Olicana® hops, often showcasing them in single-hop pale ales. These beers highlight Olicana®’s unique character and ability to stand alone or blend with other expressive varieties.

In summary, the Olicana® hop is a modern British triumph. Its bright, fruit-driven aroma, reliable agronomic traits, and brewing versatility make it a favourite for today’s innovative beer styles. As a result, more brewers are turning to Olicana® for bold, aromatic impact.
