Order of The Hop & Grower of The Year
Order of the hop
At their recent grower meeting, Richie Phillips, Chairman of Charles Faram Farms presented a very special award to Ali Capper of Stocks Farm, Suckley, Worcestershire.
The Order of the Hop award was granted at a recent International Hop Growers Congress in Lublin, Poland. Unfortunately Ali was unable to attend and so Richie collected the award on her behalf.
The Charles Faram members thought it would be a fitting tribute to present it to Ali at the recent Charles Faram Farms meeting.
Instituted by John the Fearless, who was born in 1371 at Dijon, the son of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and king of Brabant, the Order of the Hop was intended as a mark of distinction and an honour for all “gentlemen”, who contributed to the development and prosperity of the “noble” plant, which is so important for beer production.
Richie Phillips was full of praise for Ali and stated “Ali has shown outstanding commitment to the hop industry through her tireless work for the British Hop Association and Wye Hops and thoroughly deserves this award”. The members present all congratulated Ali on her achievements and a beer or two were raised in celebration.
Grower of the year
Chairman, Richie Phillips, presented the 2024 Charles Faram Farms Grower of The Year Award to hop grower Jimmy Barrett.
The prize is awarded for the grower with the best grading scores averaged across all the varieties grown. Jimmy scored consistently high for cleanliness, drying and picking as judged by the CFF grading team.
The judges were very impressed with the overall quality of hops grown by all growers in the group, particularly in such difficult weather conditions during harvest. Chairman of grading, Will Rogers congratulated all growers on an excellent result in a very difficult year.
