More Information About Nugget Hop Variety

Nugget Hops: A Bold Choice for Bittering and Aroma

Nugget hops are a popular American hop variety known for their high alpha acid content and robust bitterness. Originally released in 1983, they were developed by the USDA to offer a strong bittering option with a pleasant aroma. Nugget hops are widely used in both commercial and craft brewing.

The Aroma and Flavor Profile of Nugget Hops

Nugget hops deliver a bold herbal and spicy aroma with subtle citrus undertones. Their flavor profile includes earthy notes and a touch of resin. These characteristics make Nugget hops ideal for IPAs, stouts, and barleywines. Although primarily used for bittering, they also contribute a clean finish when used in late additions.

Brewing Benefits of Nugget Hops

Brewers choose Nugget hops for their versatility and efficiency. With alpha acids ranging from 12% to 14%, they provide strong bitterness with minimal quantities. This efficiency helps reduce costs while maintaining flavor intensity. Additionally, Nugget hops store well, retaining their potency over time.
