Five minutes with Faram – Rob Orton, Brewing & Bottling Manager at St Austell Brewery

What’s your favourite hop?

I’d have to say El Dorado®. I just love the soft peach and melon flavours it can bring when used correctly. However, I normally find that it is in conjunction with another hop.
What’s your favourite beer?

Cask Proper Job! A pint of well-kept cask beer is unbeatable!

Favourite Food & Beer pairing?

Steak & Ale Pie containing and accompanied by a dark ale.A bottle of Bad Habit, our Belgian Tripel, and soft French Brie.

Favourite beer destination?

Yakima Valley – not necessarily for the beer but to be surrounded by that many fresh hops, hop growers and brewers during harvest is a special thing.

Favourite pub in the UK?

The Pandora Inn, Mylor, Near Falmouth
What’s the one item in the brewery you couldn’t live without?

My little pen knife – always handy!

Favourite music to play during a brew day?

Got to love a bit of Tenacious D…

If you weren’t in the brewing industry, what would you be doing?

Not a lot to be honest!
Who is your biggest inspiration in brewing?

Roger Ryman, a true legend of the industry and was always ahead of the curve, never far from a radical idea and obsessed by quality.

What got you into brewing?

A complete accident really, took a summer job on the dray and fell into brewing a few months later. 15 years later here we are…
What’s your favourite beer festival?

Our very own Celtic Beer Festival has to be number one. I also really enjoyed Bristol Craft Beer Fest last year, along with some of our Proper Job Ambassadors.
What’s the last beer you brewed?

Pirates Pale Ale, a 4.5% Citra® and Ekuanot™ Pale Ale brewed in collaboration with the Cornish Pirates Rugby Team. Sadly, it never saw the light of day due to Covid-19…
Looking forward to getting back into our small batch brewery very soon!

What’s your favourite interest/hobby outside of brewing?

Rugby, Family, Golf, Beer – not in any order!

Fuggles or Goldings?

Fuggles everytime for me.
What’s next for the brewery?

Trying to support our local pubs to getting back to previous levels whilst continuing our interesting range of beers. We have a Cherry Sour awaiting bottling so keep your eyes peeled for that!
