Brew Day at Stroud Brewery
Reviving The Bulldog Pale Ale
At Farams, we believe the best way to fully appreciate the brewing process is through hands-on experience. That’s why our marketing execs, Maddie and Paddie, were thrilled when Tim O’Rourke invited them to a brew day at Stroud Brewery. He welcomed them onto his pilot kit for a unique brewing session. This wasn’t just any brew—it was a sentimental look into brewing history, with the Brilliant Beer Company’s Heritage Brews project.
a Brew day Reviving Bulldog Pale Ale
The day took inspiration from the Bulldog “Strong” Pale Ale. Simonds Brewery of Reading originally brewed it, and Belgium embraced it in the late 1940s. Head brewer Eric Downes crafted the recipe using lightly cured malt and Styrian hops. This created a pale, flavourful ale. It quickly gained fame and won two gold medals at the Brewers Exhibition in 1950.
One of the key figures in Bulldog Pale Ale’s history was Robert Porter, who sold it under his own brand. During World War II, he employed Belgian brewer John Martin. Later, John brought the beer back to Antwerp, ensuring its legacy continued.
A Modern Take on a Classic
For our recreation at Stroud Brewery’s brew day, we used traditional British hops: Challenger and Admiral.
The brew day provided a fantastic chance to see history come to life in the brewhouse.
