The Target hop variety is a well-established English hop known for its robust bitterness and aromatic depth. First released in the early 1970s, Target quickly gained popularity among brewers for its versatility. While primarily used as a bittering hop, it also offers subtle piney, citrus characteristics that support late additions in some recipes.
Target hops were bred at Wye College in Kent. The result is a hop with high alpha acid content and a strong disease resistance profile. This makes the Target hop variety a reliable option for both conventional and organic hop growers. Its compact cones and vigorous growth make it suitable for commercial-scale hop yards.
Although many brewers choose the Target hop for its aroma, its high bitterness potential also brings complex notes when used later in the boil. These include earthy, sage-like tones with mild citrus and woody undertones. Due to its assertive character, Target hops often appear in English bitters, porters, and stouts. However, they also serve well in lagers and IPAs when used with balance.
The Target hop variety remains a core component in British brewing. It is also exported to other brewing nations, particularly where traditional English styles are appreciated. Despite the rise of newer aroma-focused varieties, Target continues to be valued for its dependable performance in a variety of recipes.
