More Information About Idaho Gem™ Hop Variety

Idaho Gem™ Hops: Distinctive Flavour from the Pacific Northwest

Idaho Gem™ hops are an American variety celebrated for their bold, earthy aroma and complex citrus character. Known for offering strong bitterness and aromatic depth, Idaho Gem™ hops are ideal for IPAs, pale ales, and hoppy lagers. Their unique profile makes them a standout for craft brewers seeking innovation.

Origins and Key Characteristics of Idaho Gem™ Hops

Developed in Idaho, this variety combines high alpha acids with vibrant aroma. Typically containing 14–16% alpha acids, Idaho Gem™ hops provide firm, clean bitterness that integrates seamlessly with malt. Their aroma profile features grapefruit, pine resin, and subtle orange peel notes, creating a layered and dynamic beer character. Idaho Gem™ hops are also prized for consistent yields and strong disease resistance, making them reliable for brewers across multiple batches.

Brewing Applications for Idaho Gem™ Hops

Idaho Gem™ hops excel in both early and late additions. Early additions impart balanced bitterness that supports malt structure, while late additions and dry hopping release their distinctive citrus and pine aromas. Brewers often use Idaho Gem™ hops in single-hop IPAs to showcase their character, but they also complement other Pacific Northwest varieties in blended hop profiles. This versatility makes Idaho Gem™ hops suitable for both traditional American beers and modern craft styles.

Why Choose Idaho Gem™ Hops

Brewers value Idaho Gem™ hops for their dual-purpose functionality, bold aroma, and flavour complexity. Their ability to enhance both bitterness and aroma allows creative freedom while maintaining balance. Additionally, these hops maintain quality during storage and resist common diseases, ensuring dependable performance for small craft breweries and larger operations alike.

Beers Containing Idaho Gem™ Hops

Idaho Gem IPA by Blackfoot River Brewing Company

Blackfoot’s Idaho Gem is a SMASH variation of their Single Malt IPA. Brewed with 100% Maris Otter malt and hopped with 100% Idaho Gem hops. Idaho Gem hops are tropical and fruity with strong aroma and flavor of overly ripe pineapple and delicious Juicy Fruit candies. Blackfoot River also gave this beer the New England treatment. They increased their Whirlpool hops, added a mid-fermentation dry-hop, and increased the overall dry hop, changing not only the flavor, but also the appearance and the mouthfeel.
