More Information About Ahtanum ™ Hop Variety

Ahtanum ™ Hops

Ahtanum hops are a versatile and aromatic hop variety with a rich background and distinctive sensory profile. Grown primarily in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, this hop is especially popular in craft brewing for its bright and complex character.

The Origins of Ahtanum Hops

Named after the Ahtanum Creek area near Yakima, Washington, these hops reflect the region’s ideal growing conditions. First developed by Yakima Chief Ranches, Ahtanum hops are often compared to Cascade, but with a softer edge. Brewers appreciate the balance they bring to many styles, especially pale ales and IPAs.

Characteristics of Ahtanum

Ahtanum hops are known for their delicate yet expressive aroma. You’ll often detect notes of lemon, floral and spice on the rub, with characteristics of citrus, herbal and woody in the brew.  These characteristics make them perfect for late additions or dry hopping, where their complexity can really shine. As a result, many brewers use Ahtanum hops to create depth in hop-forward beers.

Brewing with Ahtanum Hops

When used in the brewing process, Ahtanum hops provide a mild to moderate bitterness. Because of their low cohumulone content, the bitterness is smoother than in some other varieties. For this reason, brewers often combine them with other hops to achieve a layered hop expression.

Furthermore, Ahtanum hops work well in a variety of styles. Although most commonly found in pale ales and IPAs, they also add character to saisons and lagers.

Final Thoughts on Ahtanum Hops

In summary, Ahtanum hops offer a reliable, aromatic choice for brewers looking to craft beers with bright, citrusy notes and a clean finish. Try them today to experience their impact in your next brew.
