HEREFORDSHIRE HOP GROWER SECURES BACK-TO-BACK WINS

Consecutive Success for Hawkins Farming

Hawkins Farming Harlequin Champion Hop has won another victory at the 2023 Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) British Hop Awards. Based in Bosbury, Herefordshire, Hawkins Farming proudly celebrates consecutive titles. This back-to-back success reflects the dedication and expertise of Sarah Hawkins and her committed team.

The IBD British Hop Awards stand as the highest honour in the UK hop industry. Each year, leading brewers judge samples from growers across the nation. Harlequin® impressed the experts and confirmed its position as a pioneering British variety.

Development of Harlequin®

Harlequin® was created through the Charles Faram Hop Development Program. Based in Malvern, Charles Faram focuses on creating innovative, sustainable hop varieties for modern brewers. This program is dedicated to supporting UK growers and strengthening the domestic hop market.

Harlequin® gives UK hops the bold intensity often associated with “new world” varieties from the USA and New Zealand. Furthermore, it offers vibrant tropical fruit flavours, making it a popular choice for craft brewers. These qualities support style such as IPAs and New England IPAs.

Recognition and Celebration

Sarah Hawkins expressed her pride in consecutive Champion Hop titles. She praised her team’s effort, especially Matt and his colleagues, who worked tirelessly to cultivate Harlequin®. Their achievement shows how commitment and skill can transform hop farming.

To celebrate, Renegade Brewing produced a special cask beer with the winning hop, naming it Harlequin. The beer balances moderate bitterness with peach and pineapple notes. Importantly, it finishes clean and refreshing, highlighting the hop’s versatility.

Future of British Hops

The Hawkins Farming Harlequin Champion Hop sets a high standard for British growers. Moreover, it proves that local hops can compete with international varieties. With consecutive wins, Hawkins Farming continues to lead the way in sustainable hop innovation.
