Hops in this American Rye Pale Recipe

This American Rye Ale is a cross between a Rye Ale and an American Pale Ale, creating a unique sensory character.

Bittering: Green Bullet™

Flavour: Chinook

Aroma: Citra®

The hop aromas are both elegant and refreshing from Green Bullet™, a delicate, roughly 11 – 14% AA bittering hop from New Zealand, as well as small doses of the classic American Chinook (about 13% AA) and the ubiquitous, citrus-like Citra (also 13% AA), both added at the end of the boil.

MALT in the beer recipe

The American Rye Pale Ale builds on the foundation of a classic American Pale Ale but introduces a rye-led malt profile. This approach reflects modern brewing trends where brewers are looking to enhance familiar styles through a range of subtle recipe changes.

At the core of this malt bill is a combination of high-quality base malts, including Weyermann® Pale Ale Malt and Pale Rye Malt. Together, these provide a firm backbone of gentle malt sweetness and a characteristic creamy mouthfeel. The rye component, in particular, contributes a soft spice and fullness that sets the style apart from more traditional pale ales, while still allowing hop expression to shine.

Supporting malts such as Weyermann® CARARED® and Weyermann® CARARYE® introduce layers of caramel and light toffee notes, enhancing both colour and flavour depth. Meanwhile, a small addition of SPECIAL W® and Chocolate Rye Malt brings subtle dried fruit and faint roasted nuances. These elements work well together to produce a mahogany hue and a rounded malt complexity without overpowering the beer’s overall balance.

As a result, this beer delivers a nuanced malt character that supports hop-driven aromatics while maintaining a smooth, cohesive finish.
