More Information About Harlequin ® Hop Variety

Harlequin Hops: A Standout in Modern British Brewing

Harlequin hops are a bold British variety gaining popularity for their vibrant aroma and reliable performance. Developed by Charles Faram’s Hop Development Programme, the Harlequin hop brings an exciting twist to traditional UK-grown hops. While rooted in British agriculture, this variety offers a profile that competes with modern American and New World counterparts.

Aroma and Brewing Profile of Harlequin Hops

The Harlequin hop delivers a bright, fruit-forward aroma with notes of passionfruit, peach, pineapple, and citrus. With alpha acids ranging from 9.5% to 12%, Harlequin hops work well for both bittering and aroma additions.

Used in late kettle additions or dry hopping, Harlequin hops contribute tropical and stone fruit character. They suit a wide range of beer styles, including pale ales, IPAs, golden ales, and hazy brews. Their expressive aroma helps create beers that feel modern, juicy, and full of depth.

Why Brewers Choose Harlequin Hops

Harlequin hops appeal to brewers looking for bold aromas without sacrificing balance. Although intense, the hop’s character doesn’t overpower the rest of the beer. This makes it ideal for both single-hop recipes and complex blends. It pairs well with UK-grown hops like Jester® and Olicana®, as well as American varieties like Citra® and Mosaic®.

In addition to its aroma, the Harlequin hop is known for consistent yields and strong disease resistance. These traits make it attractive for commercial hop growers and brewers alike. Its growing popularity has ensured wider availability in recent years.

For brewers interested in pushing boundaries with British ingredients, the Harlequin hop offers a standout option. Its combination of tropical notes and reliable performance makes it one of the most exciting hops in the UK today.
