Exploring the Nectaron Hop Variety

The Nectaron hop variety is one of the most exciting modern hops to emerge from New Zealand’s hop breeding program. Developed by New Zealand Hops Ltd in collaboration with Plant & Food Research, Nectaron took over 17 years to perfect. However, the long development timeline has paid off. Brewers around the world now seek this hop for its bold aroma and intense impact on modern beer styles.

Aroma Profile of the Nectaron Hop

Bursting with character, the Nectaron hop delivers powerful notes of grapefruit, ripe tropical fruit, and juicy peach. These bold aromatics make it ideal for NEIPA, IPA, Pale Ales, Lagers, and other hop-forward beers. As the beer ferments, Nectaron’s vibrant personality stands out, even in complex hop blends. Because of its concentrated aromatic qualities, it is often used in late additions and dry hopping.

Brewing Performance with Nectaron Hops

The Nectaron hop variety performs consistently in the brewhouse. It offers high alpha acids, typically ranging between 10% and 12%, which give it excellent dual-purpose potential. While many brewers value Nectaron primarily for its aroma, it can contribute a balanced bitterness as well. Moreover, it pairs well with other New Zealand hops like Motueka and Nelson Sauvin, adding dimension and brightness.

Why Brewers Choose the Nectaron Hop

In today’s craft beer market, hops that bring intensity and uniqueness are in high demand. The Nectaron hop checks every box. It brings both punch and nuance, elevating beers with its expressive grapefruit and stone fruit profile. Additionally, it adapts well to various brewing techniques, from traditional dry hopping to biotransformation methods. For brewers aiming to create memorable hop-forward beers, Nectaron is a standout choice.
