Hop Variety Description

A dwarf hop bred at Wye College, on extensive farm trials in 1995. First Gold is from a cross-pollination of WGV with a dwarf male. Much of the flavour of WGV seems to have been retained but with an added extra citrus quality, produces a well-balanced bitterness and a fruity, slightly spicy note in ales. An zesty orange quality has been observed in many beers brewed using this variety.

A Modern Classic: The Appeal of First Gold Hops

First Gold hops are a modern British variety known for their versatility and distinctive aroma. Released by Wye College in the mid-1990s, First Gold hops were bred from a cross between a dwarf female and a male Goldings hop. This pairing gave the new variety a well-balanced aroma, reliable yield, and compact growth habit, making it suitable for both commercial farms and smaller-scale production.

Aroma and Brewing Traits of First Gold Hops

The First Gold hop offers a vibrant aroma profile that combines orange peel, spice, and floral notes. Some brewers also detect hints of marmalade and herbal undertones. These qualities make First Gold hops a popular choice in a wide range of beer styles. With alpha acid levels usually between 6% and 9%, they can be used effectively for both bittering and aroma additions.

When added late in the boil or used for dry hopping, First Gold hops bring bright, citrus-driven aromatics to the beer. Their balanced profile allows them to shine in bitters, golden ales, and pale ales. They can also be blended with other British or American hops for added complexity.

Why Brewers Choose First Gold Hops

First Gold hops stand out for their consistency in both the field and the brewhouse. Their dwarf growth habit makes them easier to manage, which has encouraged their adoption in sustainable hop farming. Moreover, their aromatic strength and smooth bitterness provide brewers with reliable results across batches.

In addition to their practical benefits, First Gold hops carry a refined yet bold character that complements both traditional and modern recipes. Whether creating a cask ale or a crisp golden beer, brewers appreciate what this hop brings to the glass. The First Gold hop continues to earn its place as a dependable and aromatic variety in British brewing.
