Hop Variety Description

Bred from a cross in 1927 between Bramling (one of the traditional Golding varieties) and a male seedling of the Manitoban (Canadian) wild hop. Also known as OT48, this variety was developed at Wye College by Professor Salmon. It has a strong spice and blackcurrant flavour and firm but pleasant bittering. Bramling Cross has made something of a comeback in traditional cask conditioned beers because of these distinctive characteristics. Brews particularly well with crystal malts.

The Distinctive Characteristics of Bramling Cross Hops

Bramling Cross hops are a traditional British variety known for their bold blackcurrant and spice notes. Originally bred in 1927, they are a cross between a wild Canadian hop and a traditional English variety. This unique parentage gives the Bramling Cross hop profile that stands out among British hops.

Characteristics and Aroma of Bramling Cross Hops

The aroma of Bramling Cross hops is bold and fruity, often described as blackcurrant, loganberry, and citrus. It also carries subtle hints of spice and herbal tones. These characteristics make the hop especially appealing in darker beer styles, such as stouts, porters, and rich ales.

Despite their intense aroma, Bramling Cross hops have a moderate alpha acid range, usually between 5% and 8%. Therefore, they work well in late boil additions or dry hopping. These methods help preserve their vibrant aroma and enhance the beer’s complexity.

Why Choose Bramling Cross Hops?

Bramling Cross hops are perfect for brewers seeking a unique, fruit-forward aroma with a classic British touch. Their spicy-fruity balance pairs well with darker malts and complex yeast profiles. If you’re creating a winter ale or a bold porter, Bramling Cross hops can add an unmistakable layer of richness.
